An Oregon native, Mike McLain has had a
lifelong appreciation for wine. He began making wine as an amateur and
planted his first vineyard in 1978. In 1981 he began his career as a
broker specializing in winegrape vineyards, vineyard suitable land and
winery business opportunities. He has brokered in the sale of more than
300 various vineyard-related properties, including 12 wineries, within the
last 15 years.
Today, Mike and his wife, Karen, own and
operate Springhill Cellars
in Albany, Oregon. They grow about 20 acr es of grapes,
primarily Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris, and produce about 1500 cases of wine
each year.
Springhill Cellars wine is distributed throughout Oregon and in Southern
California, Chicago, Phoenix and Seattle. Reviews of Springhill Cellars

A licensed real estate agent since 1979 and
a licensed broker since 1987, Mike has successfully completed
the National Realtor's Association and Appraisal Course, Commercial and
Investment 101 (CCIM Series), at the Center for Professional Studies
in Eugene.
As a Realtor, he is a member of the Portland
Multiple Listing Service, the Real Estate Buyer's Agent Council and the Oregon
Winegrower's Association, where he has served as president of the
South Willamette Region three times and as a member of the OWA State Board.
Since 1981, has specialized in winegrape vineyards, vineyard-suitable land
and winery business opportunities. He has brokered the sale of more than
300 various vineyard-related properties, including 12 wineries, within the
last 15 years.
He owns and manages the McLain Vineyards on Scenic
Drive in North Albany. The 10-acre vineyard was established in 1978, and
has 10
acres currently in production. He also owns the McLain Vineyard
on Walnut Hill in Yamhill County, with 13 acres of vines in production.
From 1982-1987, he was a partner in
Bailey-McLain Vineyard Management, a consulting and
management services firm for established and start-up wine-grape vineyards. The
company helped establish or manage more than 250 acres of
vineyards in the Umpqua and Willamette Valleys.
Currently, he is the owner, winemaker and
president of
Springhill Cellars Winery Inc. in Albany. The winery, established in 1988, has won numerous awards for its wines, including
best-of-show for Pinot Noir at the Oregon State Fair, the Newport Seafood Festival
(twice) and the Sunriver Sunfest. The
Wine Spectator ranked the 1995, 1996 and 1999 Springhill Cellars Reserve
Pinot Noir at 90, 87 and 88, respectively.
Mike was engaged in wine-related fee appraisals
until 1990 and has served since as a consultant for state-certified
appraisers. He continues to do fee
valuations.
In the 2003 edition of Oregon Viticulture, the authoritative guide
to growing grapes in Oregon, he is the author of the Willamette
Valley American Viticultural Area section of the chapter on
Oregon Winegrowing Regions.
